Default No wrong build? (noob help question)

Ok, ive read it time over time, there is NO WRONG COMBO!

So, Monk... yep love healing good first i tryed all the others and the secondary that seemed to intreast me the most was Mes and Elem, so I went E since i liked the fire side of things,

Now since then almost everyone who sees me makes a comment about Mo/E being useless and i wont be able to play after Pre, now is this true, or have i just had the devine fortune of meeting every meen person playing so far?

Its really starting to get me a little down, so I figured i would ask here, since im sure someone will be able to explain why people are saying this and how accurate it is.

There may be no wrong combo, but will people still get punished for not picking the XYZ builds?

Edit: Think i may have posted this also in the wrong Forum :/ good start noobling lol. Anyways if this is the case would a mod be so kind to kick it to the right forum

You have met the mean people as you put it.

Most people that play the game alittle too hard think that theres certain things every class has to be. If your a Monk you GOT to be either /w for farming, or /mes or /nec for general monking, or these people will laugh at you.

Just go with what you feel is working and dont change your character for them. You'll have NO trouble finding groups or anything for missions. Monks that actually want to heal are in short supply.

There is no wrong combination, when I made my monk he was mo/e and picked it just for glyph of lesser energy for using heal party or aegis. If u plan to be a bonder/barrier monk I would suggest mo/me for mantra of inscriptions to make your blessed signet recharge faster so you don't rely on a battery. If your going as active protector mo/e works great same with going full heal. Also goin as mo/e in the missions before the desert you wont ever run out of energy healing people so you can bring along meteor shower to do some damage also. People that try saying 1 secondary is better than another usually follow cookie cutter builds and don't have a mind of their own. Play how you enjoy playing the game, don't listen to anyone else. If I listened to everyone else I would be stuck being a useless stance tank instead of actually helpin my group. Maybe you will come up with a build or 2 that no one else uses or has tried, very unlikely but could happen and if your lucky it could turn out better than what everyone else is using from copying other people. I personally deleted my monk because I only play my warrior and have gotten all the proffessions ascended and don't enjoy playing anything else (mesmer can be fun for soloing the smite runs). I am still tryin new things out all the time, right now my goal is to make a warrior build with every secondary that can solo snake dance and I have done it with w/mo, w/e, and w/r so far. It also does not matter what secondary you choose at the begining because later on you will have quests that you can do to change it.

if you plan on healing, you will have the combo of "glyph of renewal" <e> and "divine spirit". combining these guys means that each 5 energy spell (spammable heals) costs only 1 energy.

there is nothing wrong with mo/e.

Also remember that after you ascend, you can change your secondary. Oftentimes, as above posters have pointed out, you just need one or two skills from your new secondary to help out (usually with energy management). Your ele skills are useful, especially when using an all henchie party, I like to take some more damage spells and still be able to heal.

Do the secondary professions and then consider the following: for greater flexibility, get the necro elite offering of blood and the mesmer mantra of inscriptions as well as the ele elite, glyph of renewal (for the divine spirit combo).

Don't ever feel that your character is gimped.

As long as you don't cast firestorm in the middle of a battle, I don't see anything wrong with it. But be prepared, I don't think you will be using at the most more than 3 skills from your secondary line if you want to be a good monk.

I have seen one of the top 10 ranked guild run with a protection monk with Glyph of lesser energy. I think this is a good combo.

True, though, not every combo is equally good. For example, a ranger/necro may not be the best combo out there. And some combo's are good for pve (wa/mo and mo/war) but not so good for pvp, for example. But most combo's have at least some sort build which will work very well in certain teams for PvP. My main pve char is a ranger/war. She does will in PvE (she can run well and even solo-farm Griffons without any problems too). Many consider this a noob build, but it is as good as the very common fury warrior (a little less damage and armour, a lot more energy) in pvp.

And you can always change your decondary later in the game. And for PvP, you can make as many combo's- builds as you want.

R/N ftw!!!!

you can use blood syphon + apply poison/poison arrow and spread 6 degen through ALL enemy party members (and have high regen).

you can also effect a person with:
bleed
poison
weakeness
desease
cripple
daze

virulence ftw...

ALL COMBOS WORK! EVEN R/N!!!

Mo/E would work fine. There are the glyphs for lesser energy, and also spells that increase defense so you live longer. Go you lol

As for no wrong combo, this isn't entirely true. There are good skillsets and there are bad skillsets. For example the N/W combo brings little to the necro class. However Mo/E is a viable option (dual glyph healer.) In addition you are going to be playing pure monk until you start collecting elites anyway (even with /N and for the most part with /Me.)

No wrong builds as such, but you can make inefficient ones for sure.

As a healing and/or protecting monk it's hard to keep an eye on your party and do offensive as well, plus you're wasting energy. You're becoming a weak monk and a weak elementalist. That's what people don't like.

On the other hand, if you use elementalist skills that complement your monk build, it can be interesting.

You could use Wards on top of heals for example..

With all that said play whatever you like and HAVE FUN with funky builds at least until halfway through PvE because it's so easy anyway.

Let me repeat this- there is no bad class combo. N/W is a good mix. There are plenty of things you can do with swords creating conditions you can exploit with virulence. Bleeding, deep wound, weakness, poison and disease on one target is pretty rough. Or you can use victory is mine instead and exploit all the necro skills that give conditions. Nice healing and energy gain in one. Remember that non primary warriors can still do a lot of damage with their weapon, they lack the armour penetration that the strength attribute gives (which isnt significant really IMHO) and they cant use weapon runes, but if you put 12 into your weapon and they use curses or blood, you can have a tough character.

The thing with a N/W is that if you want do use a weapon, you have to really commit to your secondary. Other combos, like Mo/N work well when you just 'splash' a skill or two in your skill bar (like offering of blood).

The point is, there are lots of fun things you can find to do with every class combo.

As for R/N- try using mark of pain and barrage. Or splashing into curses for things like shadow of fear and enfeebling blood. Again, lots of fun things. The issue with rangers is that you really need to commit to the ranger attributes to make the most of the ranger- typically expertise, marksmenship and wilderness survival, which doesnt usually leave you a lot of points of other attribute lines. And of course, don't forget about the Touch Rangers- lots o fun to play in arena. I never tried one in PvE, but I reckon it could do rather nicely there too.

Like what everyone above me said, dont listen to those ppl who said there is only one way to be a monk.

i too started off as a mo/e, and i didnt meet any mean ppl (mainly because i left presearing in the next 30 or so minutes).

sometimes i dont even use my secondary class for 60% of the time. well just have fun and experiment. thats the best thing about playing.

You can't use a W/Mo or Mo/W in PvP sure you can not just PvE and R/N is just fine build nothing wrong with it as it is my build and and think of weaken armor then shoot your bow.I like War/N as well and maybe War/Mes the build I really loath is the Iway build War/R it is more of a PvE build.I can't stand Monking in the Tomps when I have one of those with there pets on me I hate pets in PvP anway they are always in the way.Mo/E is a good build who says you have to use any of your secoundary profession skills although like Roza said Glyth would help you.

hard to understand, but i think you said that you can't use mo/w and w/mo in PVP.

once again, you are misguided by the good old paladin build...

w/mo can become a 0 energy warrior with "strength of honor", "holy wrath" and "purge sig" to attack stronger and protect the monk.
you could also use "life bond", "succor" and "purge signet" to protect the monk and help him manage his energy...

as a Mo/W, you can stay close to your team's trapper and smile while using "victory is mine!"... great energy management when you need it the most, and it also heals you.

As everyone else has said, those people that told you Mo/E wouldn't work are just being jerks. Actually, a Smiter/Pyromancer would be a pretty cool build to play around with, and I am sure it would do fine in post-searing.
